Hire AI Developers: US AI Engineers Screened by People Who Build With AI
Last updated: November 2026
To hire AI developers who can ship, you need two things most job boards can't give you: a clear picture of the work, and a screen that separates people who built a demo from people who kept an AI feature running for real users. Direcstaff recruits US-based AI developers and AI engineers for LLM features, AI agents, machine learning models and the platforms that run them, on contract, contract to hire or direct hire.
Our recruiters build software with AI coding agents every day, from desktop and iOS apps to SaaS products and backend systems. So when we screen an AI developer, we ask the questions your own engineers would ask.
Key facts
- Who you get: US-based AI developers and engineers, screened on production work and what they personally owned.
- How fast: 2 to 4 screened candidates typically within 48 to 72 hours of a detailed brief. Contract developers usually start within one to two weeks. Permanent AI searches often run 8 to 12 weeks, because the pool is small.
- How you hire them: contract (billed hourly, on our payroll), contract to hire, or direct hire onto your payroll.
- What it costs: a contract is one hourly bill rate with no placement fee. A direct hire is a one-time fee based on first-year salary, with a 90 day replacement guarantee.
- Typical pay: most AI developers are counted by BLS as software developers, with a national median of $135,980 and a 90th percentile of $214,670 in May 2025.
Which AI Developer Do You Actually Need?
"AI developer" covers several different jobs. Hiring the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake we see, so start here.
| If you need to... | Hire a... | They spend their time on |
|---|---|---|
| Add an AI feature to your product, like search, a chat assistant or document extraction | LLM or GenAI developer | Retrieval, prompts, tool calls, evaluation sets and the backend code around them |
| Automate a multi-step task that touches your own systems | AI agent developer | Tool design, permissions, state, testing long runs, and what happens when the agent fails |
| Predict something from your own data: churn, fraud, demand | Machine learning engineer | Features, training, deployment and drift monitoring |
| Keep models fast, cheap and reliable in production | MLOps or AI platform engineer | Serving, versioning, monitoring, rollback and cost controls |
| Fix the data before any model is worth building | Data engineer | Pipelines, data quality and access |
| Decide what to build, buy or skip | AI solutions architect | Build versus buy, model choice, data paths and security boundaries |
Not sure? That's normal. Tell us what you're trying to build and what's already in production, and we'll tell you which hire comes first. Our AI staffing page has a stage-by-stage hiring order, and we place AI architects too.
What a Good AI Developer Knows in 2026
Tools change every few months. These skills don't, and they're what we screen for.
- Solid software engineering first. Python or TypeScript, tests, code review, APIs and version control. An AI feature is still software, and most of it is not the model.
- Working with models through APIs and open-weight models. Knowing when a hosted model is fine and when cost, latency or privacy means running your own.
- Retrieval. Chunking, embeddings, vector search and ranking, and the judgment to know when the problem is the data rather than the prompt.
- Evaluation. Building a test set, measuring quality before and after a change, and catching a regression when the model provider ships an update. This is the skill that separates production developers from demo builders.
- Agents and tool calling. Giving a model access to tools safely, limiting what it can do, and testing runs with many steps.
- Cost and latency. Knowing what one request costs, and how to bring it down with caching, smaller models or batching.
- Security. Prompt injection is number one on the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications. A developer who connects a model to your systems should be able to explain how they defend against it.
- Data handling. What data goes to which provider, what gets logged, and how customer data stays protected.
How We Screen AI Developers
Every candidate gets a technical conversation with us before you see their name. We ask what they built, what they owned, what broke and what it cost. A few of the questions:
- How did you build your evaluation set, and how did you know the feature got better or worse after a change?
- Where did retrieval fail, and what did you change to fix it?
- Which tools could your agent call, and how did you stop it from calling one it shouldn't?
- What did one request or one finished task cost? What did you do when that number went up?
- Walk us through a bad release. How did you find it and roll it back?
Good answers come with numbers, a trade-off and an honest account of what went wrong. You get our notes with every submission, and your engineers still make the final technical call. More questions by role are on our AI staffing page.
An AI Developer Interview Scorecard You Can Use
Use this in your own interviews so every interviewer scores the same things. Score each row from 1 to 4.
| Area | 1: Weak | 4: Strong |
|---|---|---|
| Production evidence | Only demos, notebooks or tutorials | Shipped to real users, can describe traffic, failures and fixes |
| Ownership | Describes what "the team" did | Clear about which parts they built and decided |
| Evaluation | Judged quality by trying a few prompts | Built a test set, tracked results across changes |
| Cost and speed | Doesn't know what a request cost | Knows the numbers and has reduced them |
| Security and data | Hasn't thought about prompt injection or data leaks | Can explain specific defenses they used |
| Communication | Hides behind jargon | Explains trade-offs plainly to a non-specialist |
A candidate who scores 3 or 4 on production evidence and evaluation is usually worth a second interview, even if they're thin on one tool you listed.
A Short Paid Trial Task That Shows Real Skill
If you want a work sample, keep it short and pay for it. A good one for an LLM developer takes three to four hours:
- Give them 30 to 50 sample documents and 10 real questions with the answers you expect.
- Ask for a small retrieval setup that answers the questions, using any model they like.
- Ask them to report how many answers were right, what failed and why, and what one question costs to answer.
- Ask what they would change first with another week.
The write-up tells you more than the code. Strong candidates measure before they claim, and say plainly what didn't work.
Ways to Hire AI Developers
| Option | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Contract through a staffing firm | A build with an end date, a skills gap, or proof before headcount | Get the IP assignment and data access terms in writing |
| Contract to hire | You want to see the work before making it permanent | Agree the conversion terms and date up front |
| Direct hire through a recruiter | The person will own an AI system for years | Permanent AI searches take longer, often 8 to 12 weeks |
| Hiring on your own | You have an in-house recruiter who can screen AI work | Hundreds of applicants, and job titles that don't match the skills |
| Freelance marketplaces | Small, well-scoped tasks | You do all the vetting, and availability can change week to week |
| Offshore development firms | Lowest hourly cost, and the vendor owns delivery | Time zone overlap, data crossing borders and less control over who does the work |
Our AI staff augmentation page covers contract developers inside your team in more detail, and the contract versus direct hire guide compares the costs.
How Much It Costs to Hire an AI Developer
BLS doesn't track "AI developer" as its own job. Most are counted as software developers, whose national pay in May 2025 was:
| Pay level | Annual salary | Estimated employer cost with benefits | Per hour (2,080 hours) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Median | $135,980 | $194,257 | $93.39 |
| 75th percentile | $171,980 | $245,686 | $118.12 |
| 90th percentile | $214,670 | $306,671 | $147.44 |
Benefits are added at 30.0% of total pay, the private industry share in the BLS employer cost survey for June 2026. Senior AI developers who have owned a production system usually land at the 75th percentile or above, and more in the big tech metros. BLS figures also leave out stock and year-end bonuses. Our AI engineer salary guide breaks pay down by role, level and city.
Through Direcstaff, a contract developer is one hourly bill rate that covers pay, employer taxes, insurance and our margin. A direct hire is a one-time fee based on first-year base salary, agreed before the search starts, with a 90 day replacement guarantee.

Why Hire AI Developers Through Us
Most recruiters meet AI through a chatbot in a browser tab. We use AI coding agents in the command line every day, and we've built desktop apps, iOS apps, SaaS products, backend systems and complete end-to-end systems with them, for clients and for ourselves. That's why we can follow your engineers, and why we can spot a candidate who has only called an API in a demo. The comment we hear most often from VPs of Engineering after a first call is that they forgot they were talking to a recruiter.
We focus on senior and mid-senior developers for US mid-market teams. If you need the cheapest junior hire or a large offshore team, we'll tell you we're not the right fit.
Hire AI Developers: FAQ
How do I hire AI developers?
Start by deciding which AI developer you need: an LLM developer for a product feature, an agent developer for automation, a machine learning engineer for predictions, or an MLOps engineer for production. Then screen for production evidence and evaluation skills, not tool names. Through Direcstaff you get 2 to 4 screened candidates, typically within 48 to 72 hours of a detailed brief.
How much does it cost to hire an AI developer?
Most AI developers are counted by BLS as software developers, with a national median salary of $135,980 and a 90th percentile of $214,670 in May 2025. With benefits, a median hire costs an employer about $194,257 a year. Senior AI developers usually land at the 75th percentile, $171,980, or above.
What is the difference between an AI developer and an AI engineer?
The titles are often used for the same job. When they differ, an AI developer usually builds features on top of existing models, while an AI engineer may also own training, deployment and the platform the models run on. Hire on the work, not the title.
How fast can I hire an AI developer?
Through Direcstaff, contract AI developers usually start within one to two weeks of a clear brief. Permanent AI searches often take 8 to 12 weeks, because the pool of people with production experience is small.
Should I hire a freelance AI developer or go through a staffing firm?
Freelancers suit small, well-scoped tasks where you can do all the vetting yourself. A staffing firm screens candidates for you, employs contractors on its payroll and replaces someone who doesn't work out, which suits longer builds and work inside your team.
What skills should an AI developer have?
Strong software engineering, working with model APIs and open-weight models, retrieval and vector search, evaluation and test sets, agents and tool calling, cost and latency control, security against prompt injection, and careful data handling.
Are your AI developers based in the US?
Yes. Direcstaff places US-based AI developers on contract, contract to hire and direct hire. Contract developers are on our W-2 payroll, and some senior specialists work corp to corp through their own company.
